A Love That Grew With Them: Aunt Lena & Uncle Torrey’s Story of Faith, Commitment, and Choosing Each Other

Some love stories begin with grand gestures.

Others begin with two teenagers simply growing up side by side.

For Lena and Torrey, love was never about being perfect. It was about learning, evolving, and choosing one another through every season of life.

“We’ve realized that we are not the same people we were when we first started dating. We were only 16. There was a lot of immaturity and trying to figure out life, goals, and dreams. As we began to grow and see life differently, we began to think differently.”

That willingness to grow together has been one of the greatest reasons their relationship has stood the test of time.

Love Is a Choice You Make Again and Again

After decades together, Lena believes one of the biggest misconceptions about marriage is that lasting love comes easily.

“Nowadays, no one wants to fight for their marriage or put in the work to build their foundation. Divorce is easier than working through it.”

To Lena, marriage is a daily commitment.

“Marriage is a job. It’s like a hospital—you have to put in the work together, nurture it daily, encourage, listen, communicate, trust, and always respect each other’s feelings.”

When Life Brings Storms

Every marriage will experience moments that test the foundation it was built upon.

For Lena and Torrey, one of their hardest seasons came when Torrey was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

“That was the worst and hardest news we both had to grasp. Even though it wasn’t good news, we accepted it, came up with a plan, prayed to God together, had one another’s backs, and learned that we can withstand any storm that comes our way as long as we do it together.”

Sometimes the greatest proof of love is not found in the easy moments—it is found in the moments when you decide not to let go.

The Foundation of Faith

Faith has always been at the center of Lena’s life and marriage.

“I grew up watching my grandmother pray, read her word, and lead by example. My mom and Aunt Cathy Williams played an important role in my life. No matter how hard life gets, trust, believe, and have faith in God.”

She believes marriage is a union designed by God.

“If you put God first in your marriage, believe in His word, pray without ceasing, and honor His word, you can’t help but honor your marriage.”

The Little Things That Still Matter

After all these years, Lena still admires Torrey’s perseverance, his work ethic, and the way he continuously shows up for their family.

When life becomes stressful, she remembers everything they have overcome together.

“The sacrifices, the hard work, the doubts, and most importantly, the love we have for one another make me forget about the stress, being busy, and the difficulties.”

A Legacy of Love

When Lena thinks about what she wants her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and future generations to learn from their marriage, her answer is simple.

She wants people to know that love can survive the storms.

She wants newly married couples, couples considering marriage, and even couples who feel ready to give up to understand that anything is possible when two people choose to fight for one another.

“We are still learning and growing every day, but we refuse to give up on one another no matter what.”

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of all.

A lasting marriage is not built by finding someone perfect.

It is built by choosing the same person, again and again, through every version of yourselves.

Thank you for taking the time to tell our story. We met at 16 years old, and all these years later we’re still walking through life together. Marriage isn’t always easy, and life certainly isn’t either. We’ve faced our share of challenges, heartbreaks, victories, and blessings. What I’ve learned over the years is that love grows deeper when you become best friends.
Forty years later, I can honestly say that friendship, commitment, respect, and choosing each other every day are what carried us through. Thank you for reminding us of the journey we’ve shared and the memories we’ve made along the way. We are truly blessed.

I am happy & blessed beyond measure to call these amazing people my parents and biggest inspirations in life. The foundation they laid for my brother and I have been the cornerstone of my life and own marriage. Their marriage really is a testament of overcoming & choosing love daily.
