The Biggest Mistake New Salon Owners Make

When asked what she believes is the biggest mistake aspiring salon owners make, Ronnie didn’t hesitate.

“Trying to do everything yourself.”

Many salon owners focus heavily on the creative side of the business while overlooking the importance of systems and structure. Ronnie explained that without clear policies, routines, and expectations, business owners often find themselves constantly putting out fires.

“When you don’t have clear policies or routines, you end up spending a lot of time putting out fires. It can feel uncomfortable at first, but having clear expectations makes it easier for everyone.”

The lesson? Building systems early may not feel exciting, but it creates the foundation that allows a business to grow sustainably.

Organization Is More Powerful Than You Think

For Ronnie, success doesn’t come from complicated strategies. It comes from consistency.

One of her biggest recommendations for salon owners is to focus on creating simple routines that support the daily operations of the business.

“I’d say focus on creating a routine. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Just having a consistent way to handle things like appointments, inventory, payments, and communication can make a huge difference.”

Small organizational habits eventually create larger business results.

The Tools That Changed Everything

Every business owner eventually discovers that systems save time, energy, and mental bandwidth.

For Ronnie, online booking has been one of the most impactful tools she’s implemented.

“Online booking has been a huge help for me. I also like setting aside time each week to work on the business instead of only working behind the chair.”

This distinction is one many service providers struggle with. Working in the business and working on the business are two completely different skill sets. Ronnie credits intentional planning and dedicated CEO time as key factors in helping her stay organized and continue growing.

Leadership Isn’t About Having All the Answers

One of the most refreshing parts of my conversation with Ronnie was her perspective on leadership.

Many people assume leaders need to have every answer, every solution, and every detail figured out. Ronnie believes otherwise.

“You don’t have to have all the answers. People appreciate honesty, consistency, and someone who genuinely cares.”

She explained that the culture created within a salon often has a bigger impact than any policy or procedure.

Leading by example, staying consistent, and genuinely caring about the people around you creates an environment where both clients and team members can thrive.

Building Something Meaningful Takes Time

In a world obsessed with overnight success, Ronnie’s final piece of advice serves as an important reminder.

“Be patient with yourself. Building a salon takes time, and there will be plenty of ups and downs. Don’t get discouraged if things don’t happen as quickly as you hoped.”

Success isn’t built in a day.

It’s built through showing up consistently, learning from mistakes, celebrating small wins, and continuing forward even when progress feels slow.

Those small wins eventually become something much bigger.
